Tom Wittig joined VLMMR in 2019 as an attorney with experience and expertise in civil litigation, and in particular medical malpractice defense litigation and hospital risk management issues. He has defended allegations of medical malpractice in a wide range of medical specialties, and has litigated all aspects of such cases through inception through trial. He is also an experienced appellate attorney who has successfully argued and briefed appeals in both the First and Second Departments of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. In addition, Tom has experience in providing counsel and representation to physicians and hospitals on a variety of risk management issues, including petitions and hearings for medical treatment over objection and orders to compel outpatient psychiatric treatment pursuant to Kendra’s law. Tom prides himself on building strong relationships with others, working efficiently on complex cases, effectively advocating for his clients, and achieving positive results for them.
Tom graduated from St. John’s University, where he studied psychology and business, in 1994, and graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 2000. He started his legal career as a staff attorney representing children in Kings County Family Court with the Legal Aid Society, and then spent three years in Kings County Supreme Court as the Principal Law Clerk to the Hon. Gloria Dabiri and then the Hon. Ira Harkavy. When Justice Harkavy retired, Tom moved to private practice and spent ten years at a highly regarded medical malpractice defense firm in Manhattan before bringing his skills and experience to VLMMR. Tom, his wife and two young children live in the Huntington area of Long Island.
